The nearly lost language that’s found a global stage at this year’s World Cup (opens in new tab)

UNESCO’s 2010 Atlas of World Languages classifies Lushootseed (dxʷləšucid/txʷləšucid) as critically endangered. The designation sorely needs an update. Speaker numbers have grown hundredfold and, in June and July 2026, txʷləšucid will greet international visitors at FIFA World Cup events in Seattle and Tacoma from the ancestral homelands of the Coastal Salish peoples.
