Software Engineering Is Becoming Civil Engineering (opens in new tab)

I was at CMU today talking about the future of software engineering, and someone made an observation that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about: we’re watching software engineering split into two disciplines, the same way civil engineering split from construction a long time ago.
