Chinese student Cheng Fangwei from the University of Sydney in Australia disappeared after returning to China at the end of 2024. Cheng had participated in pro-democracy protests in Sydney, including two solidarity protests for groups including Uyghurs and Tibetans. He was arrested by the Chinese Communist Party upon returning to China and was subsequently secretly sentenced to 6 years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power.”
