Eco-evolutionary feedbacks drive the co-occurrence of restriction-modification systems and antimicrobial resistance genes in bacteria (opens in new tab)
Bacteria acquire antimicrobial resistance genes via horizontal gene transfer despite defense systems that should block it. This study shows that restriction-modification (RM) systems' diversity determines this relationship, with high diversity limiting gene transfer and low diversity enabling eco-evolutionary feedbacks that promote both RM investment and gene acquisition.
