I think this is better suited to an SR. Indeed, this is quite similar to the T6SS paper that I talked about on the Ed Accept tracker today (also an SR), in that it involves a bet hedge, with a starter population dividing into two different subpopulations with distinct properties that together maximise chances of survival.
