Scientists say carbon removal faces 5bn-tonne gap (opens in new tab)
A new State of Carbon Dioxide Removal report published June 2 says countries’ current carbon-removal plans fall short of pathways that limit warming to 1.5C by more than 5bn tonnes of CO2 a year by 2050. The third edition of the report, written by more than 50 scientists, says global removals would need to rise from about 2.2GtCO2 in 2026 to 8.75GtCO2 in 2050 to retain a chance of meeting the 1.5C goal by 2100.
