Indonesia storm kills 7% of Tapanuli orangutans (opens in new tab)
A new study estimates that floods and landslides triggered by four days of extreme rain in Indonesia's North Sumatra province in November 2025 killed at least 58 critically endangered Tapanuli orangutans, about 7% of the species' estimated global population of roughly 800 animals.
