A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck offshore southern Mindanao in the Philippines at about 7:37 a.m. local time on June 8. The U.S. Geological Survey placed the hypocenter at about 35 kilometers deep, and Philippine seismologists said movement along the Cotabato Trench caused the quake.
