A Business Insider analysis of U.S. data center permits found that facilities permitted through 2025 would use an estimated 224.3 terawatt-hours to 358.8 terawatt-hours of electricity a year if all come online, up 50% from the previous year’s range. At the midpoint, those data centers would use more electricity than any U.S. state used in 2024 except Texas, with much of the demand tied to hyperscale facilities that use 40 megawatts or more.
