Maxing Out 457(b) Alongside Employer + Employee 401(k) (opens in new tab)

457(b) contributions are treated as a separate entity from 401(k) contributions. Both have a pre-tax limit of $24,500 for 2026 - which means you can have a combined pretax total contribution of $49,000 for the two. Certain 401(k) plans allow for both pretax and post tax 401(k) contributions - with the maximum contribution set at $72,000 for 2026. If you have both a 457(b) and a 401(k), does this mean you have a max total contribution of $96,500 ($24,500 + $72,000)?
