Before Debbie Lemke became the driving force behind Fielding Graduate University’s events, she found herself standing beneath two immense sixth-century Buddhas in Afghanistan, carved into remote sandstone cliffs along the Silk Road corridor northwest of Kabul. Surrounding them, she observed hundreds of man-made caves dotting the rock walls—a significant network of abandoned monks’ cells and meditation chambers.
