Awakening cryptic formatotrophy in Yarrowia lipolytica (opens in new tab)

Formate is an ideal sustainable feedstock for bioproduction, but it has been difficult to engineer formatotrophy in yeasts. Now, the combination of evolution and metabolic engineering is used to enable a yeast — Yarrowia lipolytica — to grow on formate as the sole carbon source.
