it is day one of sailing here at saint-tropez. we are doing warm-up laps and the wind speeds are just insane. but, yeah, we’ve got a formula 1 driver, valtteri bottas, onboard the danish boat - the current speed record holders. i’m a fan of sailgp and i literally, just now, jumped off the boat. i’m still sweating, small shakes. you know, it’s... that’s intense, man. ha! what was the top speed? 96. not bad, right? it’s all right for a first time. but it feels faster. it makes you the fastest sick sailor ever in sailgp. the fastest, yeah. that’s a title. i take it. ha. racing, now, and from the danish to the spanish, who are fighting to finish the season in the top three. yeah, spain’s fourth on the overall leaderboard.

that means, right now, they’re out of the grand final positions. we are getting closer to the end of the season, and we all want to be in that top three for that final. diego botin overtakes dylan fletcher! the spanish are taking no prisoners. right now, one fleet race to go, team spain leads the grand prix. indeed, stevie. but their biggest rivals, the brits, are a close second. i think when we look at emirates great britain and spain, it’s funny to look at their season and realise that it’s been up and down for both of them. but when one is up, the other is down. we’re at a point of the season where emirates great britain have been down, but now they’re up and spain’s been struggling. so the big question for the spanish is are they going to be on the rise at the right time of the season? we are about to start the last fleet race of the day. so far, team spain is leading the grand prix leaderboard. if they wrap up the day with another good result, tomorrow, they will be hard to beat.
3:33 pm
oh! what’s happening? oh, the wind’s suddenly changed direction. it’s forcing the fleet to sail away from the starting line. i’ve never seen this in sailgp before. a big pressure came and that got the majority of the fleet out of position. and we were one of them. oh, spain have missed the start! are they going to have to turn back and start again? this is going to kill their day. this is the beauty of the sport of sailing, really. sometimes, you’re just at the mercy of mother nature. for spain, well, they got really unlucky. now, they’re dead last in the race. we are behind gbr, which is where we don’t want to be. so the mindset is to come back tomorrow and beat gbr, kiwis and aussies, if we can. but what florian, the spanish wing trimmer, doesn’t know, is that here in saint-tropez, there isn’t

going to be a day two. i woke up this morning and couldn’t believe - couldn’t believe the message on my phone. “breaking news - due to incoming thunderstorms “racing on day two of the rockwool france sail grand prix “has been cancelled.” points for the event have been awarded based on the results of day one. so congratulations to the winners - emirates great britain. cheering and laughter i do think there are certain things that are out of control in our sport. come on, man, there’s a nice spot here. what comes to our mind straight away is we think that we could have done a good day today, but the podium gets a bit further away from us. congratulations to both of you. obviously not the normal way
3:35 pm
to win, but you still got to spray the champagne. we’d much rather, you know, win in the normal fashion, but, at the same time, we’re the top team after day one, and we deserve to be here more than anyone else. you must be pretty happy. you have to have a little bit of luck on your side, and you’ve got to be ready to take the opportunity when it comes. come on, guys. cheering so, again, we finished behind our main rivals and, basically, now, looking forwards, we have three events to go. if we don’t deliver in geneva, we might not get into the grand final. all you want is wind.
3:36 pm
vive la france! they’re not going to go into the water, but it’s going to drop them maybe this much. yeah. instead of dropping you like... yeah. ..this much. laughter so, in geneva, we’ve got three grands prix to go before the grand final. for the spanish, saint-tropez was really a missed opportunity. and, for them, right now, time is running out. and if the stakes aren’t high enough already, something big is happening behind the scenes. this morning, we’re proud to share that joining the start line next season is a team that brings remarkable racing. a new team has just been announced
3:37 pm
to enter the league next season. the artemis sailgp team. but, to me, the bigger news is who’s driving that team - and that is nathan outteridge. incredibly exciting. you know, for me personally, i was here at the very first sailgp event. nathan is a two-time runner-up here at sailgp. now, artemis have a long history in sailing. that means they’ve got money and power to poach athletes from other big teams in the league. day two. race four here in geneva, and spain are way at the back - right now, in ninth on the event table. can they keep it there? it’s very frustrating because we are on the limit. everything.
3:38 pm
i was speaking with andy. he’s like, you know, he’s like, “a lot of teams approach my guys.” they’re approaching everyone. it’s crazy. as a league, we’ve seen an explosion in activity between teams. now we’re seeing a lot more drama off the water. have they been coming to you or have, um...? well, it’s interesting because when i was called the poacher, i didn’t like to break into the team owners. it may not have been me poaching them, but... all the guys that want to stay. but we need to put some rules. it’s impossible. untranslated radio message bleep oh, the wind’s getting lighter and lighter. no-one’s foiling. got to think that if race control don’t see more wind coming, this race is going to get terminated here and now. and with one fleet race to go, spain is in big trouble. well, you know, we’ve got this sort of gradient breeze here
3:39 pm
and it’s got to fight off this one, so... look at this. race is terminated. yeah, it’s over. ok. so far, the spanish have had a very disappointing grand prix. if they don’t get the chance to fix it in the final fleet race of the day, their season will end right here, right now. just after race four, it was hard not to think that the season was slipping from our hands. but at the same time, you always try to fight those thoughts and just focus on the next race. and we are waiting for race five to start. but the wind has literally disappeared. there’s just nothing, is there? no. how long do we give it? well... yeah, that’s incoming wind coming down from this way. coming down,
3:40 pm
probably going to give it a little bit longer. yeah. “race five on hold. stand by for further instructions.” so we don’t know. doesn’t look very promising, looking at the water, the conditions to race at the moment. so, yeah, then you start praying for any ounce of wind that can come back to get in that fifth race. well, the wind forecasts show an imminent new breeze, but if it takes too long to arrive, race five will be cancelled and the top three teams right now will move to the event final. no complaints. no complaints. no, no. we’ll take what we can get at this point. exactly. anything. so i’m afraid that they are thinking about just doing the final. race four finished, and we could see the breeze dying and dying. i remember it actually quite well. i was on the boat, and the things that were going through my head were a little bit... it was a dichotomy, you know,
3:41 pm
i was trying to stay positive cos it is what we have to do as professional athletes in those moments, but at the same time, i was getting dragged down by the emotions of... yeah, of losing a bit of hope because the wind was not showing up and we were running out of time. we thought, this race, the season, is over for us. we need a... we need some points on the leaderboard not to finish the race. if we finish like this, season is over for us, we are, like, eighth or ninth. in ten minutes, i will call the final, probably. we were hopeful for that last spread of wind, to be able to just get a chance to do a fifth race and get a chance to go back in the top three, cos after that fourth race we were just one point away from the final, so... let’s go near the grandstand. hold on a minute. wait. the swiss boat has just broken from the fleet and has started to sail towards the grandstand.
3:42 pm
we were the first ones to sail and try to show mel and the race committee that, yeah, there’s breeze, we have to go, we can... we have to use this. swiss are moving. well, the wind is coming down and it’s almost down to us here now. i mean, it’s pretty much here. the swiss are moving. danish don’t want to move. that’s probably cos they’re in the final. yeah, we were the ones trying to push the thing. and we also went by the crowd once, cos we thought, “ok, that might be it, so we have to give the crowd, “you know, a last thank you.” yeah, no, it’s improved dramatically and it’s getting better very quickly, so, ok. do race five. “race management...” yeah, race five. it’s a miracle. we’ll keep fighting.
3:43 pm
3:44 pm
and it is a go for race five. all teams moving towards the start for a last and shortened fleet race. tbr. oh, they’re all behind the lines and it’s now a game of acceleration. it look like we are getting some speed now. germany deutsche bank. in the middle. looked like they could get towards mark one in good shape. bleep go! it looks like spain is going to have the position. this could be the race to keep their season alive. yeah. well, spain are in the lead. they needed one more race, they got one more race, and now they’re making the most of it at the very last minute. oh, they’ve got us used to this, though, don’t they?
3:45 pm
the spanish, they’re out in front, which is great. but the better thing for them is that they’ve left this mess behind them and penalties are getting dished out. the team that suffered the biggest penalty is one of spain’s biggest rivals in the overall championship. indistinct radio chat oh, unforced error by new zealand, taking a penalty. this is seriously going to jeopardise their race to the grand final. unbelieve... i mean, that says everything. new zealand first to ninth in three short legs. it’s insane. just super tight from first to eighth on the leaderboard. and we ended up 100% on the wrong end of it, so. oh, look at that. right now, the kiwis are ninth, australia are tenth. emirates gbr 11th. spain couldn’t ask for more. their grand final rivals are bleeding points by the minute.
