hello again. welcome along. pep guardiola’s 1,000th game as a manager delivered a win that might prove to be among his most significant as manchester city beat liverpool 3-0 at the etihad to go second in the premier league and cut arsenal’s lead to just four points. erling haaland missed a penalty but then got his customary goal to give city a first-half lead - his 99th in the premier league. nico gonzalez made it two just before half-time and then man of the match jeremy doku made it three on the hour mark. and liverpool might have had an equaliser at 1-0 but virgil van dijk’s header was ruled out and city went on to complete a comfortable victory - the 726th of guardiola’s coaching career. i’m just going to say thank you to, you know, to the players, backroom staff to give me that present.

i’m so proud to do it here in manchester with my city and, yeah, now, you know, take a break. it’s good. we had - we talk about that, the difficult week we had, to get bournemouth, like champions league and liverpool and we did it outstanding. and yeah, now rest and come back with energy back. we have to accept the result because there was a fair reflection of the difference between both teams. first half, they were dominating completely. we struggled a lot with the amount of players they brought in between the lines. so, then, you are hoping you can go to half-time maybe with being 1-0 behind. even better, maybe 1-1 or 2-1 behind. but that didn’t happen - we went 2-0 behind. and then, it’s even harder if you go here to change things around the second half.

newcastle’s poor premier league form continues. they lost 3-1 at brentford in the game which saw defender dan burn sent off. they had taken the lead through harvey barnes but once again away from home, newcastle gave it away after a brentford equaliser. burn got a second yellow as he gave away a penalty which igor thiago put away. he then added a second to make it 3-1, leaving newcastle just two points above the relegation zone. whatever could go wrong did go wrong in that second period. of course, we conceded that first goal and that changed the mood and the feeling around the stadium. we didn’t respond well enough to it. and then, of course, the sending off in the second goal which ultimately cost us the game. doubly frustrating for you though, surely, because you had another excellent win in the champions league between these two games? yeah, but i think the champions league for us is you have to sort of forget about it to a degree, and the premier league is everything. and at the moment, we’re suffering in the competition, we’re not delivering the performances - especially away from home - that we need, so it’s a collective thing. we know we’re going to get criticised - and rightly so - for our away form and our recent performances and all we can do is stick together and try and fight back.

elsewhere, nottingham forest have their first premier league win since the opening weekend of the season, beating leeds 3-1 at the city ground. they did it from behind as well with a crucial second forest goal coming from morgan gibbs-white after a week in which he was left out of the england squad for leeds. it’s the first time that they’ve lost after scoring the opening goal in league football for 2.5 years, but it handed sean dyche his first premier league win with forest. i think every time you show people how you go about your business, you’re scoring goals - particularly for goalscorers - then that just adds to that thing and all the stories just go away and you can relax and keep working and keep playing this football. it’s all we want from all of them just it’s professional, professional enjoyment, you understand? you’ve got a professional job that’s that is your job but it becomes an enjoyment about winning like that and it ignites each other, you know? and that’s what we want. people like morgan has gone through a bit of noise - not always positive noise.

i think that’s his third since we’ve been out. that’ll do for me if he keeps going at that rate, we’ll be all right. what about aston villa? well, their form has taken them up 11 places in the last month and a bit with a fifth win out of six premier league games coming emphatically at villa park, where they beat bournemouth 4-0. rediscovering their goalscoring form is long overdue as well, having only got nine in the league before today, but they got four and emi martinez saved a penalty, too, as villa are up to seventh in the table. happy. good evening because after our poor start we are progressing, getting better and getting balanced. we are competing better and, of course, more focus. and the players, they are responding in our challenges. we are sending in the dressing room really fantastic. in the scottish premiership, hearts’ lead is down to seven points after they drew 1-1 home to dundee united and second-placed celtic beat kilmarnock 4-0. and celtic’s victory could prove to be temporary manager martin o’neill’s final game if the club find a new permanent boss during the international break. the glasgow rivals rangers also won their 3-0 victory

as a third in a row in the league for new boss danny rohl. elsewhere, aberdeen and motherwell drew 1-1 while there are plenty more football results from across europe on the bbc sport website. lando norris says he had the perfect weekend in brazil as he took a step closer to becoming the formula 1 world champion by winning the sao paulo grand prix with his title rival and mclaren team-mate oscar piastri finishing fifth. norris now leads the championship by 24 points. patrick gearey reports. from up there, he can almost see the title. lando norris stands further clear at the top. mclaren are doing an amazing job, giving me a great car. we’re pushing hard every single weekend and i’m pushing hard away from the track, so rewarding, rewarding. it doesn’t come easy, that’s for sure. starting on pole, he needed to stay away from young kimi antonelli in the mercedes behind him. he escaped. but brazil’s gabriel bortoleto didn’t see much of his home grand prix.
3:52 am
he didn’t last a lap. after the restart, they charged after norris again. watch oscar piastri on the right. that collision resulted in a ten-second penalty for norris, his team-mate and closest rival. max verstappen remains a long way back, but not for the want of trying. having started in the pit lane, a remarkable drive took him to third. but in the end, norris was clear. he won the sprint race yesterday, he won the grand prix today and, with three rounds left, he has every chance of winning the drivers title. patrick gearey, bbc news. marco bezzecchi won the portuguese motogp to claim his second win of the season and fifth of his career. the italian started from pole at the algarve international circuit and controlled the race to beat spanish riders alex marquez and pedro acosta. the longest ever motogp season ends next weekend with the 22nd race in valencia. now, of all the northern hemisphere rugby nations, wales have had to wait the longest to get their autumn under way.
3:53 am
in fact, most have played twice before wales eventually took to the field against argentina on sunday. the wait, though, was not immediately rewarded with a record 52-28 defeat to their opponents to begin life under new coach steve tandy. the home side were 14-0 down early on, despite replying with two tries of their own. argentina pulled away, touching down seven times in all as wales suffered a tenth successive home defeat. one of their four scores came from captain jac morgan, who was injured in the process. his dislocated shoulder will likely rule him out for the rest of the autumn. i ain’t 100% sure what has gone on. i think it might have been - it looked like his shoulder did - his shoulder there. he’s been with the medics in the change room, so i haven’t really had a chance to speak to him.
3:54 am
but yeah, it’s clearly a blow like british lion captain, you know, inspirational leader for us as a side. but we spoke about it there you know, creates opportunity for other people. we’ve got to find other ways now people have got to get motivated in different ways from a different voice, and that’s a challenge for us. i got to live the - live the dream today and play at home for wales and in front of a very good crowd and i thought it was brilliant out there, i really enjoyed it. i thought we our attacking game we put out on the field and we put a good account of ourselves with the ball and just little lapse of concentration here and there cost us. but i’ve got to look forward now to the test next week and really pro game on the field again. carlos alcaraz began his bid for a first atp tour finals trophy with a straight-sets win over australian alex de minaur in their round robin clash in turin. despite de minaur’s battling display, recovering from 4-1 down to force a tie break in the opening set, it wasn’t enough to bring down the spaniard as he tries to finish the year as the world number one, having just lost that ranking to jannik sinner. i’ve been struggling, yeah, the last three, three years to - to come to the end of the year
3:55 am
with energy, with motivation. this year is a little bit different, which i’m really proud about the way that i - that i’ve been doing the things to come here with motivations and, yeah, i’m just really excited and looking forward to playing great tennis and giving myself the shot to try to win this tournament. england’s aaron rai has won the penultimate tournament of the season on the dp world tour, the abu dhabi championship. rory mcilroy is the leader in the current overall standings. he made a late surge on the final day, shooting a ten-under par round of 62. it looked like tommy fleetwood would beat him by a shot after he got to 25 under par but rai birdied two of the three final holes to take it to a play-off and then also birdied the first extra hole to take the victory. it’s hard to sum up. obviously
3:56 am
and obviously just trying to stay in your zone. it’s hard to put into words at the moment how this feels or how i’m going to reflect on it, but just amazing
