hello again. welcome along. pep guardiola’s 1,000th game as a manager delivered a win that might prove to be among his most significant as manchester city beat liverpool 3-0 at the etihad to go second in the premier league and cut arsenal’s lead to just four points. erling haaland missed a penalty but then got his customary goal to give city a first-half lead - his 99th in the premier league. nico gonzalez made it two just before half-time and then man of the match jeremy doku made it three on the hour mark. and liverpool might have had an equaliser at 1-0 but virgil van dijk’s header was ruled out and city went on to complete a comfortable victory - the 726th of guardiola’s coaching career. i’m just going to say thank you to, you know, to the players, backroom staff to give me that present. i’m so proud to do it here in manchester with my city and, yeah, now, you know, take a break.

it’s good. we had - we talk about that, the difficult week we had, to get bournemouth, like champions league and liverpool and we did it outstanding. and, yeah, now rest and come back with energy back. we have to accept the result because there was a fair reflection of the difference between both teams. first half, they were dominating completely. we struggled a lot with the amount of players they brought in between the lines. so, then, you are hoping you can go to half-time maybe with being 1-0 behind. even better, maybe 1-1 or 2-1 behind. but that didn’t happen - we went 2-0 behind. and then, it’s even harder if you go here to change things around the second half. newcastle’s poor premier league form continues. they lost 3-1 at brentford in the game which saw defender dan burn sent off. they had taken the lead through harvey barnes but once again away from home, newcastle gave it away after a brentford equaliser.

burn got a second yellow as he gave away a penalty which igor thiago put away. he then added a second to make it 3-1, leaving newcastle just two points above the relegation zone. whatever could go wrong did go wrong in that second period. of course, we conceded that first goal and that changed the mood and the feeling around the stadium. we didn’t respond well enough to it. and then, of course, the sending off in the second goal which ultimately cost us the game. doubly frustrating for you though, surely, because you had another excellent win in the champions league between these two games? yeah, but i think the champions league for us is you have to sort of forget about it to a degree, and the premier league is everything. and at the moment, we’re suffering in the competition, we’re not delivering the performances - especially away from home - that we need, so it’s a collective thing. we know we’re going to get criticised - and rightly so - for our away form and our recent performances and all we can do is stick together and try and fight back. elsewhere, nottingham forest have their first premier league win since the opening weekend of the season, beating leeds 3-1 at the city ground. they did it from behind as well with a crucial

second forest goal coming from morgan gibbs-white after a week in which he was left out of the england squad for leeds. it’s the first time that they’ve lost after scoring the opening goal in league football for 2.5 years, but it handed sean dyche his first premier league win with forest. i think every time you show people how you go about your business, you’re scoring goals, particularly for goalscorers, then that just adds to that thing and all the stories just go away and you can relax and keep working and keep playing this football. it’s all we want from all of them just to - it’s professional, professional enjoyment, you understand? you’ve got a professional job that’s that is your job but it becomes an enjoyment about winning like that and it ignites each other, you know? and that’s what we want. people like morgan has gone through a bit of noise - not always positive noise. i think that’s his third since we’ve been out. that’ll do for me if he keeps going at that rate, we’ll be all right. what about aston villa? well, their form has taken them up 11 places in the last month

lando norris says he had the perfect weekend in brazil as he took a step closer to becoming the formula 1 world champion by winning the sao paulo grand prix. with his title rival and mclaren team-mate oscar piastri finishing fifth, norris now leads the championship by 24 points. patrick gearey reports. from up there, he can almost see the title. lando norris stands further clear at the top. mclaren are doing an amazing job, giving me a great car. we’re pushing hard every single weekend and i’m pushing hard away from the track, so rewarding, rewarding. it doesn’t come easy, that’s for sure. starting on pole, he needed to stay away from young kimi antonelli in the mercedes behind him. he escaped. but brazil’s gabriel bortoleto didn’t see much of his home grand prix. he didn’t last a lap. after the restart, they charged after norris again. watch oscar piastri on the right. that collision resulted in a ten-second penalty
