Zachary Kai restarted the IndieWeb Book Club in October 2025. The book in question was The Creative Act by Rick Rubin.
I am in strong alignment with the ideas in this book. Creativity is the birthright of absolutely every human being.
It is not the exclusive tool of Beyoncé and grade-schoolers and Itzhak Perlman.
I enjoyed the book. I enjoyed how it cheerleads for every one of us to think of ourselves and the things we do differently. I am in favor of telling folks that art and “everyday” problem-solving are in close alignment.

I am from the late 20th century, where Rick Rubin started out as a teenager who loved rap music and met everyone and did a little bit of everything win hip-hop. I am not shocked to find that he has become an éminence grise, but his youthful shenanigans are at odds with the heft of this book. Hip-hop is at its best when it ingests everything and picks and chooses the good stuff, and I think this book does that.
And everything can be art. And art can be a way of life.
Even if one makes zero dollars from it.
Go make some art and be inspired.
It’s a worthy book. I look forward to more IndieWeb Book Clubs!
