Reports based on Gurman’s Power On newsletter are stating that Apple has cut the deal with Google to utilize custom Gemini model run on Private Cloud Compute.

Reports based on Gurman’s Power On newsletter are stating that Apple has cut the deal with Google to utilize custom Gemini model run on Private Cloud Compute.
If you are paying attention to AI space, despite the popularity, Google has quite neat model (I guess hoarding data on everyone and everything has paid off). Allegedly, Anthropic’s model has performed better than Google’s, but decision was made to go with Google’s offering due to its cost savings (this will cost Apple “only” $1bn). This should be interim solution, as Apple still believes it can get its own model in the end that can run the new Siri at some point in the future.
Seeing what Google is doing with Pixel line ,and the capabilities there looked similar to what Apple was trying to achieve with the omnipresent Siri, is the right move. They will most probably never disclose this openly and take Gemini more as one of the services providers.
If this means that Siri will finally be able to search the internet, understand a command without the need to say it in a very specific way, that would be a huge win and reparation to the Siri brand as a whole.
Apple is still targeting 26.4 release with this, so looking forward to this once we have first betas out.
Apple is in a tough spot when it comes to AI, but as the AI bubble is seemingly inching towards a burst, they might be the winner in the end. Taking things slow, not fully putting all the eggs into one basket and honing the local foundational models could be a way how they claim victory after this all ends.
