Another 30 days have passed, so I wanted to share a quick update on my writing experiment.
Out of those 30 days, I managed to write on 23 days. I wasn’t as consistent as previously, but that was the point: I wanted [to cut myself some slack] so that writing would stay fun. And, indeed, this change really did help! There were seven days during which I didn’t have enough time or energy to write, so I didn’t even try.
Seeing how much progress I made despite those off-days was reassuring. It also took away some of the stress, which made my writing experiment more sustainable and fun.
On top of that, I more or less stumbled into a consistent routine. After failing to write in the early mornings, I ended up writing in the late evenings instead. By “late” I mean sometime after 10pm, when the whole family (including myself) is lying in bed. To not disturb anyone’s sleep, I get to type on the dimly lit screen of my mobile phone only. This is comically far removed from my ideal writing setup, but it works surprisingly well. Plus, in this way I can squeeze in some writing even on the most busy days.
As a result, I think I’ve finally found a way to write consistently. To see if this is true, I’m going to stick to this format for the rest of this year.
There’s one thing I’m going to change though: in addition to the personal stories I’m currently telling, I’ll share a few (at least one) book reviews too. It’s a new format for me, but I absolutely love talking about the books I’m reading anyway. Perhaps I can capture some of that excitement on this blog. So stay tuned!
