At its simplest, coffee only needs to be ground, mixed with water and filtered. But these aren’t simple times, and as any coffee person knows, consistently great cups — black or milk-based — depend on a lot more than the basics.

This year brought fresh solutions for nearly every detail before and after the brew, including innovations in water, milk, cleaning, carrying and even tools for skimming crema from espresso.
