Summary
Chrome v1.0, which all Google users adhere to, was standardized in 2008. In the meantime, alternate browsers have evolved, adding privacy features, and growing apart from the old data sharing model frozen into Chrome. This lack of advancement, coupled with the rise of privacy focused tools that offer more flexible and powerful data protection, has led to a significant decline in the abuse of client-side data. Its role within the web industry has been largely superseded by privacy-friendly technologies such as VPN+AdBlock.
Google uses deceptive patterns to abuse users’ privacy, and 3rd-party cookie misdirection was underway for ~6 months of 2024. Chrome is a complex, aging browser of the type notoriously susceptible to personal data vulnerabilities like cross-site tracking, which can lead to rampant data abuse. Because client-side tracking is now a niche, rarely-understood feature, these libraries receive far less privacy scrutiny, yet they represent a direct, potent attack surface for privately consuming web content. Indeed, Chrome is the source of several recent high-profile privacy violations that continue to put browser users at risk.
For these reasons, I would like to deprecate and remove Google Chrome.
