Brazilian graphic designer Breno Bitencourt is known for his bold, expressive logo designs that push traditional design boundaries. He’s a graphic and industrial designer by training and joined Dribbble as a college student in 2008 (when it was still an invite-only platform). Since then, he has carved out a unique style and approach influenced by literature, personal experiences, and a commitment to transparency in the creative process.

The Dribbble Journey: From Imposter to Icon

Breno has had a sense of uncertainty and curiosity about design from a young age. Growing up in a small town, he wasn’t sure what direction his career would go, but he knew he wanted to make a living in design. “I was just trying to figure out how to make money and live in another city,” he shares. In college, he stumbled upon an online design forum where a local designer invited him to join Dribbble. “It felt like a prize to me.” Breno had limited knowledge of design and English at the time, so he relied on a translator to communicate. But as his career and English progressed, Dribbble became one of his most important platforms.

“It’s where I learned the most about design. I was surrounded by the ‘design all-stars’ and felt like an imposter at first, but it pushed me to improve.”

Breno’s desire to learn from others on Dribbble led him to share his process unconventionally. He was one of the first users to upload GIFs on Dribbble, and he used them to show his design process from start to finish, in contrast to the tendency for designers to hide their processes back then. “People were surprised by the GIFs because there was this implied esoteric knowledge about design that everyone kept to themselves,” he explains. By sharing his creative journey, he gained a reputation as a thoughtful and innovative designer.

A Bold, Expressive Approach to Logo Design

Breno likes to push boundaries as a designer and believes many designers stick too strictly to technical rules; his approach is more fluid and expressive. “I don’t focus as much on the technicalities as other designers,” he says. “For me, creating something real and relatable is important.” Breno wants to create simple logos that embody personality and life. “It’s hard to do, but that’s what I strive for.”

He incorporates storytelling throughout his logos, symbols, and narratives. Breno believes a logo should tell a story. “It’s about finding the right elements to create something visually impressive and meaningful.” That’s why Breno’s design process is based on openness and collaboration. He is willing to embrace his clients’ input even when it leads to unconventional ideas. When a client suggests something wild, he loves it. “The crazier the idea, the more challenging it is, and the better the solution might be.”

Drawing Inspiration from Literature and Life Experiences

While many designers exclusively draw inspiration from visual sources, Breno’s creative process is heavily influenced by literature. “My upbringing was dominated by reading and speaking, so the need to create came from wanting to express myself more visually.” Breno’s connection to reading and writing has helped shape his approach to design. “Reading has helped me focus, concentrate, and understand how to construct ideas. It’s different from simply looking at visual content; it’s about feeling the story.”

Reading is an essential part of his creative process. The deeper meanings behind words and the way they describe connections inspire him. “I try to feel the flavor of the words when I read. It’s about exploring the nuances and truly experiencing the material.” His logo design explores deeper emotions and meanings through simple yet powerful symbols.

Dribbble’s Role in Breno’s Freelance Success

Dribbble has helped Breno build an iron-clad portfolio while connecting with clients looking for something unique. “Most of my clients have come through Dribbble. They are open to suggestions, which ensures better results. They’re looking for fresh ideas,” he explains. It’s a more interactive and collaborative way of working. Because of this, Breno appreciates Dribbble’s new project features, which allow seamless collaboration and payment.

Dribbble is not just a platform for Breno; it’s a community that supports him during difficult times. “When I’m feeling less creative, Dribbble is a safe harbor that reminds me people appreciate my work, which gives me the confidence to continue working.”

A Personal Connection to Design: A Logo for His Father’s Business

A particularly meaningful project for Breno was the logo he designed for his father’s local marketplace, which has been passed down through generations. “Creating my father’s business logo was a very special experience. It gives me great pleasure when my father tells his friends I made the logo.” This project reminds him of his progress and fuels his desire to continue creating meaningful work.

“Designers must learn from their own stories and experiences to create something unique.” Ultimately, following your intuition will lead you in the right direction.”

The Future of Breno’s Design Career

Breno is looking forward to exploring new ideas and continuing to push the boundaries of his design practice. “My future is always a mystery,” he says. “But I know I’ll always follow my intuition, aiming to make my work more expressive and human.”
