This miniseries is…Great? Yeah, I think it’s great.
It starts with a raven telling the reader a somewhat revisionist history of Danny Ketch.
According to the bird, Ketch and his Ghost Rider were different from the other Spirits of Vengence, because Danny was always in control of his alter ego. That’s not how I remember it, but it’s a good way to reboot the character with his own special twist.
The raven is “Mister Eleven,” who, on behalf of Zadkiel, offers Danny more Ghost Rider power so that Ketch can take on an enemy of the ghost riders known as Verminus Rex.
A bunch of rat men called the Berev’ha Dentii were exterminated by angels until Blackheart resurrected their leader “Verminus Rex” to serve as a Spirit of Vengeance in Blackheart’s war against ghost riders. The Berev’ha Dentii were able to feed off of the power of the ghost riders.
Mister Eleven gives Danny power in drips, making him addicted to the power-ups. So, although Ketch started as the guy in control, he gradually becomes a junkie.
Along the way, Danny meets other spirits of vengeance who are working to fight Verminus Rex. Like Shoba Mirza, a hindu spirit of vengeance.
She appears to die, giving Danny her power, but she’ll be back.
Mister Eleven also seems to die, but he can jump into other bodies so he’ll be back as well.
Ketch kills Verminus Rex and takes his power–craving it like an addict–but it is too much for him, and he overdoses. On death’s door, Zadkiel appears and offers to save Danny’s life if he will gather all power from all the Spirits of Vengence…
Including his brother Johnny Blaze!
See, THIS is how you reinvent a character. Great work.
