The Matenadaran has recently acquired a painting by an unknown artist that holds both documentary and artistic value.

Materials related to the establishment of the Matenadaran as a research institute are extremely scarce, and this artwork is one of the few known depictions of the building’s early construction phase.

According to available information, during the Soviet era — amid criticism of the cult of personality — the artist removed the painting from his home, as it featured a statue of Joseph Stalin in the background, in place of today’s “Mother Armenia” monument.

The painting will be displayed as part of the upcoming exhibition “The Eternity of 1 Year — G.”
