trianna lives on a lake. which isn’t uncommon in michigan, most people know at least one person who lives on a lake. i didn’t for a while — my mom knew people who lived on lakes. but i never knew anyone personally. she invited me and my brother over once during the summer between college and high school - that bittersweet summer when all your friends are leaving for college and you’re all somewhat unsure of what’ll happen next. it’s the time of year where we promise to stay in touch, even if we don’t follow through. excitedly we light matches and toss them onto old bridges, watching those yellow and orange hues engulf the rotting wood.
pretty early on in the night, trianna suggests we go swimming. we can take her boat. none of us have any swimming gear but, after a while of pleading, we agree. my brother and his ex girlfriend, claire, a gorgeous, tall girl with blonde hair side eye each other — not in a mean way, but in a playful, friendly way. trianna starts up the boat and we’re off.
one of the girls, maddie, asks me some questions - we went to elementary school together and i went to a different high school than her - one of them was who my first crush was. it’s this kid named brogan. we all laugh and gag, teasing me for crushing on brogan.

it’s the end of august. last month, i threw an end of summer tie dye party. sophie tells me about this boy — elliot. i know of him, i say, he thinks you’re pretty, she responds. i blush. but i don’t think it means anything, because i thought he was dating someone. also because i assumed he was gay.
somehow, i get his number from an ex-friend and we start texting. he’s a year younger than i am — a senior in high school. he begins flirting with me heavy. i think i have a crush on him by week two. we plan to meet up before he leaves for florida. he’ll be back soon. soon.
