I’m fond of the expression "herding cats" as in something that is difficult and frustrating being "like herding cats." But I think we might have missed the point.
We use cats as the example here because they are unherdable. It is against their nature. No one should try to herd cats. It is futile. So next time I am tempted to get frustrated in this way and say something is like herding cats I’m going to stop and think.

This realisation came when my mum described trying to get all the grandkids to do something as being like herding cats. A perfect use. But also, I thought, don’t then? That’s a sign.
