UAB is just a few weeks removed from firing previous head coach Trent Dilfer.
Going back to 2023, Dilfer went 9-21 during his time with the Blazers. He started off this year 2-4 before the team decided to let him go.
Since then, Alex Mortensen became the interim head coach and led UAB to a win over Memphis, arguably the best program in the Group of Five this season.
Emotionally, the Blazers quickly moved on from the Dilfer era. Literally, they may have moved on almost as rapidly.

FootballScoop reported on Friday that SMU offensive coordinator Casey Woods has emerged as a target of interest to become the next head coach at UAB.
Woods is a successful coordinator at a current Power Four school who has experience at UAB.
He was a tight ends coach, run game coordinator, and recruiting coordinator there for three years after the football program came back in 2016. The Blazers set several school records and put together some highly-regarded recruiting classes during his time there.
As for his tenure at SMU, the Mustangs were eighth in the FBS in points per game (38.7) and 16th in yards per game (454.9) in 2023, their last year in the American. SMU, in its first year in the ACC, helped the Mustangs reach the College Football Playoff in 2024. The Mustangs are 6-3 overall this year.
Woods has also been a tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Missouri. He coached wide receivers and was a recruiting coordinator at Arkansas State in 2012 when the Red Wolves went 10-3 and earned a Sun Belt title.
