This is just a quick update to highlight some steady progress in my long-form reading goal — finally. More books, more time, more reading. Less time-consuming distraction, less skimming and scanning. Also, I’m now a palm reader. And I always have a pocketbook or two.

I’ve been making headway in The Lord of the Rings, now about 31% of the way through the epic adventure. Tolkien’s writing is really good; I’m glad to finally experience it. Plus, I’m getting more depth from the story (character development and world-building) in its written form compared to the Peter Jackson films. That said, I’m more impressed now with the films, knowing how faithful they are to the story, at least in spirit.

Since that book is soooo long to read (for me), I started to lament that I wasn’t making any progress in reading my great backlog of books — so many good reads to enjoy. So I recently started a new non-fiction book to read alongside the great fiction above. I’ve already matched 31% progress (it’s a lot shorter)! It’s called, The Joy of Missing Out. It’s like the opposite of FOMO.
Well, I’m trying to not miss out on reading long books, so I am still missing out on social media — no fear. Intentionally. I’m also missing out ignoring video games for now.
I’m now 31% through both books — Apple Books widget.
It’s easier to find time to read since I’ve minimized other activities. And it’s easier to read by just using my phone: not my MacBook or iPad. Simple! My iPhone is always with me and I can hold a huge tome in one hand with ease, swiping through pages — it’s modern “palm reading.” Also: love color book covers and highlights.
The Apple Books widget in the image above is in the “medium” size, showing my two current books. I simply tap the book cover to open the one I want to read and jump right to where I left off. Really couldn’t be easier. The “Goal achieved” is the amount of time I have set to read per day — now at 20 minutes. I’ve found that by reading two books at once, I CRUSH my daily goal! As for the reading streak, I don’t try to keep one. If I streak, it’s on accident.
So that’s my progress and I’m a happy reader. And I can’t wait to dive into my other backlogged books. I think I’ll keep this two-book system going where I can flip between different good reads. It kind of feels like good mental cross-training.
Reading and writing go hand-in-hand, like two sides of one coin. I’d been blogging a lot but not reading long stuff, just short web articles or social media posts. My brain needs better.
