Protected bike lanes are coming to an east-west corridor connecting the Westwood and Sawtelle neighborhoods under new plans being developed by the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT).

The Ohio Avenue Safety and Mobility project, which would span from Westwood Boulevard in the east to Centinela Avenue at the Santa Monica city line on the west, would include protected bike lanes as well as a host of other traffic calming measures. Continuous two-way protected bike lanes would be built along the segment of Ohio running from Westwood underneath the I-405 Freeway, before terminating at Ohio’s endpoint at Westgate Avenue next to University High School. From there, the corridor would continue meandering westward as a “neighborhood greenway” on side streets toward its eventual terminus.

Other project components would include:

• multiple mini traffic circles and speed humps within the neighborhood greenway stretch;
• curb extensions;
• signal improvements;
• improved ADA ramps; and
• enhanced crosswalks.

Project construction is expected to occur between 2026 and 2027.

LADOT is also in the outreach phase for a similar project along Westwood Boulevard, although specific improvements have yet to be announced. The project corridor spans from the UCLA campus in the north to Exposition Boulevard in the south, and would connect with Metro stops on the D and E Lines, as well as the Ohio Avenue corridor.
