I did a deep dive into the science behind red light a little while back. Since then, I’ve been trying out more products and the Ulike ReGlow LED mask (use code MUFFIN for $100 off) has been one of my favourites so far. It has great specs, along with really user-friendly design features that make it easy for me to use it consistently – essential for getting benefits out of home devices.

I also took photos of my face while using the mask over 32 days, with minimal changes in the rest of my routine – the changes were surprisingly visible!

Wavelengths and modes
Ulike ReGlow has 4 wavelengths (colours) of LEDs. Like most higher quality masks on the market, it has the most common and best tested red and infrared wavelengths (at 630 and 830 nm) that can penetrate deeper into the dermis for faster healing and repair, increased collagen and elastin, and reduced inflammation. Additionally, it has blue (465 nm) LEDs for the acne mode (but this has a higher risk of triggering hyperpigmentation), and yellow (590 nm) LEDs which are much less researched, but may be absorbed better by blood and can help with redness.
These wavelengths are combined into 4 different modes, which target a few more skin concerns than a standard red light mask. You can mix and match these modes based on what your skin needs. Ulike recommend using 1-2 modes each time (8 to 20 minutes total), not exceeding more than 20 minutes total per session.
- Glow (Red + NIR + Yellow, total 20 mW/cm2): for skin brightening and uneven skin tone
 - Firm (Red + NIR, total 40 mW/cm2): for anti-aging (fine lines and firmness)
 - Rejuvenate (Red + Yellow, total 40 mW/cm2): for calming redness and making skin more resilient
 - Clear (Blue + Red + NIR, total 30 mW/cm2): for targeting acne

The auto shut-off is set to 5 minutes for the Glow and Clear modes, and 8 minutes for the Firm and Rejuvenate modes.
There are 68 spots containing one of each colour LED, for a total of 272 LEDs. They’re arranged pretty evenly inside the mask. There’s a mirrored surface backing each spot, and between all the spots, to spread out the light and maximise the amount that ends up on skin (they claim 77.4% higher light irradiance).

Design
In my opinion, the best thing about this mask is the design. Ulike have been making home IPL hair removal devices for over a decade, and it feels like their experience in making those has translated into this mask. I didn’t think design would make that much of a difference, but once I started using red light masks more, I quickly changed my mind!
With red light masks, you really need to use them regularly (multiple times a week) to see benefits. I’m not great at sticking to using products consistently, so it can be a real challenge to force myself to use a fiddly mask that feels uncomfortable, requires wiping down after every use, and forces me to sit still and close my eyes. But this is the most user-friendly, easy to use mask I’ve tried so far.
Most masks need to be fitted onto your head with a few velcro straps. This has a padded head strap that you adjust once, then place on your head each time afterwards. There’s no more adjusting required and it takes half a second.

It feels very secure when it’s on – I can move around and do most standard activities with it. While it’s a bit heavier than a standard flexible red light mask, the headstrap makes it feel lighter.
The built-in eye shield is fantastic for blocking out light – while red and infrared should be safe, blue light can be risky for some people’s eyes, and the light really limits what you can do during a treatment. The shield also helps secure the mask on your head, and keeps the lights at a set distance from the skin (roughly 1 cm). There’s no nose or mouth hole in this mask, but I found the gap large enough to be comfortable for breathing, and I didn’t experience any heat buildup.
My favourite thing about most hard masks is that you don’t need to wipe the inside each time to avoid risking breakouts. While you do sacrifice skin contact, for me it’s worth it for the convenience, and I’ve gotten a dark spot from pressing an LED too hard into my skin before (I over-tightened a flexible mask).
It also feels very rugged and solidly built – I’m quite clumsy, so I worry about accidentally breaking connections in flexible masks.
Before and after photos
I’ve mostly been using the Glow and Firm modes. My skin is very prone to hyperpigmentation, so I avoid treating it with blue light.

I’ll have to admit, I had doubts that there’d be enough changes to see in photos, but I took them anyway just in case. In the middle of the trial period I also happened to get a massive pimple on my cheek, which happens only once a year or so.
Here’s Days 1, 18 and 32 of using the Glow Mode for 5 minutes 3 times a week, plus the Firm mode around once a week:

I was really impressed by the reduction in redness, especially around my nose – my skin has been a bit more easily irritated lately, and while I know other people have said it was helpful for this, this made it really clear to me.
Clinical studies
Ulike also performed some clinical studies through an independent testing lab (SGS Guangzhou). There were lots of parameters measured, including:
Study 1: 32 Asian women (aged 32 to 45), 28 days – 6 treatments a week, 10 minutes each of Glow and Firm modes
- 14% increase in skin gloss
 - 9% improvement in skin elasticity
 - Reductions in wrinkle area for: crow’s feet (10%), undereye wrinkles (20%), forehead wrinkles (10%), nasolabial wrinkles (5%), glabella wrinkles (8%)

Study 2: 34 Asian women with sensitive skin (aged 21-35), 28 days – 6 treatments a week, 10 minutes each of Rejuvenate and Clear modes
- 26% increased skin hydration
 - 23% reduced skin sebum
 - 9% decreased skin tone a* value
 - 4% reduced skin melanin content
 - 38% reduced stinging (lactic acid)
 - 13% reduced skin redness (dermatologist evaluation)
 - 20% less total acne lesions (dermatologist evaluation)

Consumer perception values were pretty similar across the board: 97% of users saw reduced forehead lines, faded acne, fewer wrinkles and smoother skin, and reduced redness.
I was pretty impressed at the noticeable changes after only 4 weeks, which made sense since there were noticeable differences in my skin with a much less intense treatment schedule in 4 weeks too. It was also interesting to see that the Clear mode with blue light led to reduced melanin in (I’m assuming) mostly Southern Chinese subjects, which is where my family is from.
Overall, I’m really impressed with this mask – as well as the surprisingly noticeable results on my own skin, I really love the convenient design that removes so much friction when it comes to sticking to using it.
