I’ve long contemplated writing something about the badass survivor women of ’90s rock, and Shirley Manson is right there at the top of the list. Manson and Garbage have been cranking out the hits and the angst and the energy since the ’90s, and when I saw them most recently opening for Tears for Fears at the Forum in 2022, it was like no time had passed. “Survival Mode” is a bit of a bleak name for a group show, but it’s brutally honest as far as what artists are going through during these trying times. The exhibit brings together three Los Angeles artist friends — Eduardo Soto, Abraham Garcia and Cesar Massturd — to show work that looks critically at capitalism, how L.A. has changed during their lives and what comes next. Garcia said, “I made a piece titled ‘Survival Mode,’ and it was about how some peers and I live — trying our hardest, working hard, hustling, supporting others, just to be consumed and eaten up by capitalism and social criticism. Living in such an expensive city, it seems like no matter how hard you hustle (work) or how much you accomplish, the city will eat you alive.”
