I think Mark Zuckerberg may have grown a conscience after all the hurtful things Facebook and Instagram have done to the world. It seems to me that he’s purposely trying to tank his apps by injecting them full of fake AI crap.
I probably wouldn’t dismantle my evil empire this way, but to each their own; sometimes you have to think outside the box.
Recently, Zuck spoke on an earnings call about the incoming glut of AI-generated content that’s going to fill up social media feeds. He noted that social media has gone through two eras, one with content from friends and family, and one with content from creators. The unspoken suggestion here is that AI content will make up the third era — and Zuck wants to improve Meta’s recommendation systems to push the “right” AI content to users. Here’s what Zuck said:
“Improvements in our recommendation systems will also become even more leveraged as the volume of AI-created content grows. Social media has gone through two eras so far. First was when all content was from friends, family, and accounts that you followed directly. The second was when we added all the creator content. Now, as AI makes it easier to create and remix content, we’re going to add yet another huge corpus of content on top of those. Recommendation systems that understand all of this content more deeply and can show you the right content to help you achieve your goals are going to be increasingly valuable.”
The company already has a TikTok-style feed of AI-generated slop in the Meta AI app that it’s calling Vibes, but after scrolling through it for a few minutes, I have no idea why anyone would want to use it. Maybe it might be fun to prompt something cool for yourself, but I really don’t understand why I’d want to then sit and scroll through other people’s meaningless prompts?
Overall, it seems like Meta is going down a dark path, but it’s not quite as dark as Twitter and the shit show that is Grokipedia, so that’s something.
That being said, it’s rare to see good news about Meta anymore. Recently, there was even a case where a lawyer for the company attempted to hide internal Meta research that showed the company knew about teen harm on its platforms.
Just to cap all this off, as Meta and X chase AI, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has come forward to say thatchatbots haven’t been a significant traffic driver in his recent earnings call. This is partly because chatbots like ChatGPT don’t often send web traffic to sites like Reddit.
