German police are investigating a fire and an explosion overnight at two major hospitals in Berlin, believed to be politically motivated incidents, authorities said.

A police spokeswoman said on Tuesday that a fire was discovered in a building at the Charité University Hospital in central Berlin during the night.

There was also an explosion at a second hospital in the capital’s Neukölln district. Police suspect that illegal pyrotechnics, such as firecrackers, were used in the blast.

No one was injured in the two incidents.

The investigation is being conducted by the State Security Division, which is responsible for acts committed by political extremists, and by explosives experts.
