There’s nothing like writing a bio to make you remember who you are. As I was writing a quick “about me” for GovTrack, I realized how long it’s been since I actually wrote some poetry or sat down to try my hand at a short story. I do think about these things a lot, conceptualizing ideas into nifty what-ifs; and then I leave those ponderings in the recesses of my brain to collect dust like an old dream.

For the last several years I’ve been caught up in writing about politics, almost exclusively. I feel so driven towards my message in that genre. It’s so easy to jump in and do the work—pen to paper, fingers to keyboard—when I’m shooting for a fact-based summary, or an expression of my thoughts around certain facts. I’m easily up for the task when the mission is to inform others. But I don’t have the same drive, that get-up-and-go, when it comes to writing other things. Sometimes I want to combine politics and poetry, but they feel like opposite switches on the same circuit for some reason. I think I pull from different parts of myself to conjure the words—politics pulls from my brain while poetry from my heart. The mind and heart can and do often coexist, I just haven’t figured out that mastery, I guess. Here’s what bothers me: what used to be a passion for writing in general has grown into a passion for writing in a very limited way about one general (albeit very broad) topic. One of my favorite things about myself is that I’m a writer, but I’ve painted myself into one corner on an expansive canvas.
I’d like to say that I’ve decided to commit to writing some poetry, but I’ve only committed to the consideration. Whatever I do with that will likely be found on Bear though.
