Australian drivers are buying more electric and hybrid vehicles than ever and experts say they are forcing down petrol and diesel car sales.

Petrol-powered vehicles have recorded their lowest market share on record as electric and hybrid cars speed away with many drivers.

The Australian Automobile Association highlight the trend on Monday in its quarterly Electric Vehicle Index, which shows the market share of internal combustion engine cars dropped more than 11 percentage points in two years.

By contrast, sales of electric cars reached their peak during the September quarter and hybrid vehicles continued to accelerate.
