Though most of us are familiar with broccoli, many don’t realise that its younger version, broccoli sprouts, packs an even bigger nutritional punch. These delicate baby greens, harvested just three to five days after germination, may look unassuming, but they are packed with nutrients.
Nutritional profile of broccoli sprouts
According to the International Sprout Growers Association, a 3-ounce (85 g) serving of broccoli sprouts contains:
- Calories: 35
- Carbohydrates: 5 grams
- Fibre: 4 grams
- Protein: 2 grams
- Fat: 0.5 grams
- Vitamin C: 60% of the Daily Value (DV)
- Vitamin A: 10% of the DV
- Calcium: 6% of the DV
How broccoli sprouts boost health
Adding these tiny greens to your diet can boost health, according to Dr Li.
“One standout benefit of broccoli sprouts is their ability to enhance immune function. They contain sulforaphane, a natural bioactive compound that activates your immune system,” he said.According to a 2016 clinical study, participants who drank a broccoli sprout shake after receiving a flu vaccine showed stronger protection against viruses than those who received the vaccine only.Dr Li also added that these tiny sprouts can slash the risk of cancer. “Beyond immune support, broccoli sprouts are rich in bioactives like glucoraphanin, which help your body fight illness and reduce the risk of cancer. They can also balance hormones, improve insulin resistance, ease PMS symptoms, and support digestion,” he said.The doctor also pointed to research suggesting that the intake of broccoli sprouts may help restore brain chemistry linked to schizophrenia.
How to consume broccoli sprouts
Dr Li suggests consuming broccoli sprouts raw, as cooking can reduce their potency. “I recommend adding raw sprouts to smoothies, salads, or avocado toast,” he said.The physician also shared a recipe for a delicious broccoli sprout smoothie.
Ingredients
- 1 cup almond or soy milk (or other dairy or non-dairy milk of choice)
- ½ banana
- ½ cup frozen mango chunks
- 1 handful broccoli sprouts (about ½ cup)
- 1 cup spinach
- 1 tsp chia seeds
- Optional: 1 tsp honey for sweetness
