BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of Boston says its bike lane initiative appears to be working.

Thanks to protected bike lanes and new infrastructure, more bikers than ever are traveling on Boylston Street.

"I’m not surprised at all, because I see everyone uses these now to go to work," one local said.

According to a recent city report, 11% of all traffic volume is now made up of cyclists.

"I appreciate that the city has the infrastructure to support the cyclist because for me it’s better than dealing with the traffic," another local stated.

The report also shows that between 2022 and 2024, car traffic volume decreased by 5% across all bike projects in the city.

"If the data is showing that people are actually taking advantage of it, I think that’s awesome," one person said.

While many cyclists appreciate the report’s findings, the presence of more fellow bikers on the street has created a new problem for these blue bike users.

"I’m looking right now to find a dock for my bike. I can’t find one, so I think there needs to be more docks to accommodate all of the additional cyclists," another resident said.

The city says there is potential for more growth, adding that future projects can be expected to show similar impacts.
