Creating an ideal notebook in NotebookLM

The real payoff of this workflow is the final product: a NotebookLM notebook that is rich, layered, and instantly accessible. My self-hosting learning journey is the perfect example of how I built this ideal notebook.

I didn’t start with a blank page; I started with context. My NotebookLM notebook was already populated with three essential types of source documents.

To truly cement the knowledge, I use the feature to generate an audio overview based on my notebook. This lets me review the entire context — the video transcripts, my notes, and the sourced Gemini text — while commuting or exercising.

Crucially, NotebookLM always shows me the original sources in the sidebar next to the answer. If the summary mentions ‘port forwarding,’ I can click the linked source, whether it’s one of my personal notes, a YouTube transcript, or one of the web links I fed from Gemini.
