I might not endear myself to my software engineering colleagues with this post, but even if mine is a minority opinion I think it’s worth stating:

The importance of the mental state called “flow” when developing software in teams is vastly overrated.

I’ve heard the concept of “flow” mentioned semi-regularly at work, mostly in arguments for reducing the number of meetings or other interruptions in order to allow for longer stretches of focused work time. And I get it! It is annoying when you are in the middle of a complex task with a lot of context in your head and you have to stop and attend a meeting about open enrollment or backlog refinement or whatever. Many teams do have a tendency to accumulate more meetings including more participants for whom the value steadily diminish…
