Trolltrappan — which means “The Troll Staircase” in Swedish — is a deep, narrow natural fissure that snakes its way up a 4–5 meter rock wall in a forest north of Enköping. Though it looks as though it was crafted by invisible hands, it is actually a diabase dike that has partially eroded over time. That hasn’t stopped local folklore from insisting trolls made it themselves.

Arriving there is part of the adventure: there are no signs, no official trail markers, and the wooden one (used to) tell you the direction has been gone for years. Visitors must park on a nearby forest road, near a locked boom, and hike about 2 km into the forest. If GPS fails, the real challen…
