Magic: The Gathering - Edge of Eternities
It’s always an absolute honour to be asked to make artwork for Magic: The Gathering cards, just by virtue of the incredibly talented artists they work with in the past. I’d done two cards previously for two different sets, so when Wizards of the Coast asked if i’d like to make five cards for their new space themed set it was a no brainer. Fantasy art in space? yes please!
Grove of the Burnwillows
The brief for this one was to depict to trees glowing, one green and one blue. As the image evolved i decided to tether the leaves/tendrils to an extended root system to try and give it an exotic otherwordly vide.

Grove of the Burnwillows
The brief for this one was to depict to trees glowing, one green and one blue. As the image evolved i decided to tether the leaves/tendrils to an extended root system to try and give it an exotic otherwordly vide.
Reflecting Pool
The idea here was to illustrate a reflective ocean world with visiting craft skimming along the surface with mirror like reflections, between giant ancient looking coral structures.
Wandering Fumerole
An initial foray into creature design, I generally do landscapes and worlds so it was invigorating to be pushed out of my comfort zone a little. The Fumerole was described as being lizard like but having crystal like forms on it’s back.
Echoing Deeps
The brief for this illustration was to depict a world that’s literally being held together by a vast ancient framework, the absence of which might cause the tectonic plates to drift into space. The challenge was to create the largest sense of scale possible whilst retaining a decent compositional balance.
Cascading Cataracts
Waterfalls falling into space. A classic sc-fi/fantasy trope. Similar to Echoing Deeps the challenge was to convey a sense of scale, but also avoid anything veering too close to Roger Deans’ work on the subject.
Thanks!
