Quebec post-hardcore/melodic hardcore/emo band Spite House released their very good sophomore album and Pure Noise debut Desertion last week (following their 2022 self-titled debut LP, which came out on New Morality Zine), and now they’ve told us about their 10 favorite post-hardcore albums. Their list ranges from ’90s classics like Fugazi’s Repeater and Silent Majority’s Life of a Spectator to more recent beloved albums like Title Fight’s Shed, Touché Amoré’s …To the Beat of a Dead Horse, and Pianos Become the Teeth’s The Lack Long After, and if you like any or all of those records, you should definitely check out Desertion. It carries the torch lit by these albums very, very well, and it’s fueled by very powerful subject matter. As this excerpt of the band’s bio explains:
“When I was 17, my dad passed away from suicide,” [vocalist/guitarist Max Lajoie] explains. “Then ten years later my mom called me to tell me she had cancer, and ten days later she passed. The first Spite House record is more about this wake up call and realizing you need to do what you want in life but Desertion is more about how these tragedies have informed so much of my life–it’s about trying to look them in the eye and reassess them as an adult. I want to move past them but I also want to take some kind of lesson from them.”
Watch Max, bassist Nabil Ortega, and drummer Marc Tremblay discuss the 10 post-hardcore albums on their list, along with a stream of the new album and the video for “10 Days,” below. Pick up Desertion here.
Spite House are currently on a Canada tour with The Dirty Nil and Heart Attack Man, and next year they’ll tour Europe with Militarie Gun. All of their upcoming dates are listed below as well.
