Serie A overreactions: AS Roma to end Scudetto drought, Antonio Conte to leave Napoli and more

AS Roma are leading the Serie A standings alongside Inter before November’s international break

Serie A is now heading to its second international break of the 2025-26 season, and the title race is as close as ever. Inter and AS Roma are at the top of the table with 24 points after 11 matches, while AC Milan and Napoli are following with 22 points and Bologna are currently fourth with 21 points after winning against Antonio Conte’s Napoli on Sunday.

Juventus sit fifth in Serie A with 19 points and are among four clubs that have already changed managers this season. Luciano Spalletti replaced Igor Tudor at the helm of the Bianconeri, while Fiorentina dismissed Stefano Pioli after a disappointing start and appointed Paolo Vanoli. Genoa also made a switch, bringing in Daniele De Rossi to replace Patrick Vieira, and Atalanta will part ways with Ivan Juric during the upcoming break and will name Raffaele Palladino as their new head coach. Now, it’s time for some overreactions:

Roma will win the Scudetto

The Giallorossi had an incredible start to the season and are currently leading the standings with 24 points after 11 matches, despite some injuries that are deeply affecting the rotations of Gian Piero Gasperini, who joined AS Roma this summer after leaving Atalanta. It’s interesting to see how different the numbers of the Serie A leaders are after the opening games of the season, as both Inter and Roma won eight matches, lost three and drew none, but while Inter scored 26 goals in 11 games, Gasperini’s team only scored 12. On the other hand, the Giallorossi have shown far greater defensive solidity, conceding only five goals so far, the best record in the league. Inter, by comparison, have conceded 12 in 11 matches, the same as Sassuolo, who currently sit eighth in the table. Historically speaking, defensive solidity pays off when it comes to winning the Serie A title, and if Roma are able to keep going like that, they will have chances to win their first Scudetto in more than 20 years.

Conte to leave Napoli

Napoli had a disappointing Sunday as the Azzurri lost 2-0 against Bologna, and despite a pretty good position in the standings, Conte showed all his concerns after the game. The Italian manager spoke to DAZN and said, “This year we’re really struggling because we’re not a team. I take full responsibility, but it’s hard even for the coach to change this. You can’t do heart transplants. Each of us needs to find back our spirit, our heart, our aggression. I don’t want to just go along with a dead man.”

Those words are certainly worrying for Napoli fans, as Conte is no stranger to strong statements, but this time, he seems almost helpless about what’s ahead. It won’t be surprising to see him leave if things don’t change in the short term, and with him, everything can happen also during the ongoing season.

Italiano is the best Serie A manager

On the other side, there is also a manager who is showing all his best. Vincenzo Italiano proved once again to be one of the best, if not the best, coach in the league right now. Bologna’s manager not only led his team to a win over Napoli on Sunday, closing the gap to just three points from the Serie A leaders but he’s also earning praise for the quality of football his side are playing, with Bologna consistently among the most entertaining and well-organized teams in the league. He was able to improve the incredible work of Thiago Motta two years ago and improved the way they play. Under Italiano, Bologna can dream and achieve even more in the future.
