Top 5 Things to Watch

OMAHA (DTN) – Here are the Top 5 things the DTN Newsroom is tracking for the week of Nov. 2. Watch for coverage of these and other topics throughout the week on our subscription platforms as well as on www.DTNPF.com.

Note that all report release and webinar times are Central Standard Time unless otherwise noted. Also, all reports noted are subject to delays due to the government shutdown.

1. Reset clocks, reset markets: Clocks roll back to Standard Time early Sunday morning. We’re also watching to see if the reset in the grains markets holds; that reset comes on heels of the announced trade deals with China. The more the markets examine that deal, the less unique and exciting it looks in terms of longer-term market impacts.

2. Trade deal details: We continue to poke around for details of last week’s trade deal with China, which reportedly includes increased soybean and sorghum purchases. For the most recent commentary around the deal, see DTN Ag Policy Editor Chris Clayton’s blog here: https://www.dtnpf.com/….

3. Mini-clippers roll through: An upper-level trough in the North Pacific will continue to bombard a ridge during the first two weeks of November with storm systems. The result will be several systems that tend to move over the northern edge of the ridge – through Canada or the northern United States that we typically call clippers. A new one looks to move through every couple of days. Clipper systems produce strong winds both ahead of and behind the storm, bringing a burst of warmth on the front end then a big temperature drop behind. But with this week’s systems originating from the Pacific and not northwestern Canada or the Arctic, they will lack the punch of cold air. Models are keen to keep temperatures above normal in November even with these systems moving through. 4. South America weather: A front is bringing scattered showers to central Brazil during the next few days. Another system will move through Argentina this weekend, filling in showers across southern Brazil and Paraguay and continuing next week across Brazil. Another system will move through Argentina in the middle of next week with scattered showers.

5. Reports due this week: Note many of the reports are still up in the air as the government shutdown extends into its fifth week. These are reports scheduled to come out during the week of Nov. 2. Monday at 8:45 a.m. is the S&P Final Maufacturing PMI. At 9 a.m. is Construction Spending and Multivariate Core Trends Inflation. At 10 a.m., Grain Inspections. At 3 p.m. NASS weekly Crop Progress report. Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. is U.S. Trade Deficit for September. At 9 a.m. the Factory Orders and Job Openings data is scheduled. Wednesday at 7:15 a.m. sees ADP employment. At 8:45 a.m., S&P Final Services PMI is scheduled. At 9:30 a.m. the EIA’s weekly petroleum status including ethanol production and stocks is planned for release. Thursday at 7:30 a.m. sees Grain Export Sales, Initial Jobless Claims and U.S. Productivity numbers, followed at 9 a.m. with Wholesale Inventories. At 10:30 a.m. is the Weekly Economic Index. Friday at 7:30 a.m. is scheduled the U.S. Employment report and unemployment rate and hourly wages, and at 9 a.m. Consumer Sentiment followed by 10 a.m. release of Survey of Consumer Expectations. At 2 p.m. Consumer Credit is scheduled, then at 2:30 p.m. is the CFTC Commitment of Traders report.

Looking beyond next week, NASS sent out a news release on Oct. 31 saying the following key data will be released in November: Milk Production on Nov. 10 (previously scheduled for Oct. 22); Crop Production on Nov. 14 (previously scheduled for Nov. 10) along with World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE); Cattle on Feed on Nov. 21 (as previously scheduled); and Milk Production on Nov. 21 (as previously scheduled).
