This is the second post in a series on timely dataflow. The first post overviewed some of the context for timely dataflow, and suggestions at new directions. This post will start to detail some of the moving parts of the new hierarchical approach.

Our plan is to organize timely dataflow graphs hierarchically, into nested scopes, each of which can be implemented by other timely dataflow graphs. This has several advantages, mostly due to the layer of abstraction hiding details that other parts of the outer timely dataflow graph need not know. On the other hand, we will need to think carefully about the abstraction boundary to avoid giving up precision.
