AND JUST IN TIME FOR SWIM SEASON. THE POOL IS PART OF THE WEST SIDE LIFE COMPLEX, A NEW FACILITY NOT JUST FOR THE SCHOOL’S STUDENT ATHLETES. THERE’S A NEW GYM WHICH CAN BE USED FOR AP TESTING FACILITY. WE’RE ABLE TO HAVE ENOUGH SPACE THAT WE CAN HAVE ALL OF THOSE DESKS. A MULTI-PURPOSE AREA POSSIBLY USED FOR INDOOR BAND REHEARSALS. ANYBODY CAN COME IN HERE AND UTILIZE THIS SPACE AND EVEN A STUDIO FOR THE FACULTY. IT WORKS NICELY INTO OUR GOALS AND PLANS FOR OUR TEACHER RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION AS WELL. CONSTRUCTION STARTED IN MARCH 2024 AND WILL FINISH UP JUST IN TIME FOR THE SPRING SEMESTER. FROM DEMOLITION TO DEBUT, SENIOR RYAN KELLEY HAS BEEN ALONG FOR EVERY STEP OF THE JOURNEY. WE’D GO IN, TALK TO THE LEAD PROJECT ENGINEER AND JUST SEE WHAT’S HAPPENING. JUST INFORM AND UPDATE THE COMMUNITY. KELLEY IS ALSO A STUDENT ATHLETE AND HE CAN’T WAIT FOR PRACTICE TO START. THE NEW WEIGHT ROOM IS GOING TO BE AWESOME. IT WON’T BE CROWDED IN THERE ANYMORE, SO WE WANT TO FIGHT OTHER TEAMS AND HAVE TO LIKE SCHEDULE SPECIFIC TIMES, HE SAYS. NOT ONLY WILL THE ADDITIONS HELP HIM PHYSICALLY, BUT ACADEMICALLY. I GET STUCK IN TRAFFIC ON PACIFIC STREET AND, YOU KNOW, LEAVING AT LIKE, YOU KNOW, SEVEN FEET. I’D BE LEAVING WAY EARLIER, WHICH HERE IF I DRIVE HERE, YOU KNOW, I JUST DRIVE THROUGH THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND IT’S IT’S REALLY SHORT DRIVE AND SAVES ME A LOT OF TIME. THIS IS ONLY PHASE ONE OF WEST SIDE’S UPDATES. PHASE TWO IS A RENOVATION OF EXISTING AREAS THAT WILL BE COMPLETED IN SUMMER 20

After a 5,000-mile journey, this pool is ready to welcome swimmers.“The pool was built in Italy, and it is the same style of pool that the Olympics use,” Elizabeth Power, Westside director of communication and engagement, said. “The way the water works in this pool is going to reduce turbulence for our student-athletes.“It’ll open just in time for swim season. The pool is a part of the Westside Life Complex — a new fitness center not just for the school’s student-athletes. There’s a new gym that will be used for AP testing.“We’re able to have enough space that we can have all those desks,” Power said. There’s a multi-purpose area that will possibly be used for indoor band rehearsals.“Anybody can come in here and utilize this space,” Power said. The building even features a studio for the faculty.“It’s worked nicely into our goals and plans for our teacher recruitment and retention, as well,” Power said.Construction started in March 2024 and will finish up in time for the spring semester. From demolition to debut, senior Ryan Kelly has been along for every step of the journey. Kelly has been working with the Westside alumni association, creating update videos to be posted on social media.“We’d go in, talk to the lead project engineer, and see what’s happening,” Kelly said, “Just inform and update the community.“Kelly is also a student athlete, and he can’t wait for practice to start.“The new weight room is going to be awesome,” he said. “It won’t be crowded in there anymore, so we won’t have to fight other teams and have to schedule specific times.” He said the addition will not only help him physically, but also academically.“I’d get stuck in traffic on Pacific Street, leaving at like 7, I’d be leaving way earlier ,” Kelly explained. “If I drive here, it’s just a trip through the neighborhood, and it’s just a really short drive and it saves me a lot of time.” This is only phase one of Westside’s updates. Phase 2 is a renovation of existing areas that will be completed in summer 2026.
