When the Raspberry Pi launched in 2012, I was lucky enough to snatch one of the first batches. This is when I caught the self-hosting bug. At that time, I was a student with ample spare time and few responsibilities. I viewed self-hosting as a way to reduce my dependency on the cloud (a.k.a. other people’s computers) and take back ownership of my data, but most importantly as a technology playground.
