When we think about a book, we usually focus on the primary text. But books have all sorts of ancillary stuff going on in the front, the back, and the margins. Sometimes we pay attention to it, other times not. But there are occasionally treasures in the bits we ignore.

Pliny wasn’t alone. Ancient and medieval authors dedicated books to patrons or potential patrons as a way either of publicly expressing gratitude for their support or boldly fishing for a job. Often these dedications took on the form of lengthy addresses. After all, one’s livelihood depended on the work’s reception—not by the public at large but, rather, by the the patron.
