Bring together important and impactful expertise by leading a thematic issue in your research field! MRS journals have launched a Thematic Issue Proposal portal and are now accepting proposals for topical issues to be published in any of our prominent journals! MRS publications cover a broad scope of topics on the most relevant materials science of the day, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation worldwide. Publishing with MRS brings widespread attention to both the findings and the researcher who publishes them.
Thematic issues allow Guest Editors to highlight a particular topic of interest by examining and assessing the current research in that field. As such, Guest Editors are expected to have demonstrated expertise in the proposed subject area as evidenced by prior peer-reviewed publications.
See mrs.org/publications for more information on MRS journals and links to each journal’s website.
Lead a thematic issue in your area of expertise!
The Thematic Issue Proposal portal will guide you through the key information:
1. Title and scope: The topic should be of sufficient interest to attract a broad readership. The description should clearly state what the thematic issue will cover and, if necessary, what it will not. A bulleted list of topics is also required, which should reflect the thematic issue description and can be used to highlight important topics to target for submissions. The proposal should list 5-10 key works in the field.
2. MRS journal of interest: Specify which journal best suits the topic and scope of the proposed issue. You may also include a secondary journal of interest.
3. Proposed Guest Editors and potential authors: List two to four Guest Editors from different institutions as well as a description of their expertise, publication record in the topical area, and editorial experience. Guest Editors should be experts in the proposed thematic area, well-organized, and able to adhere to deadlines. You will also provide four to six invited and/or review paper titles and the lead authors.
Thematic issue proposals will be reviewed by the Editors-in-Chief and members of the MRS Publications Committee. Organizers of accepted proposals will serve as Guest Editors of that thematic issue under the direction of the appropriate Editor-in-Chief. Proposals should be submitted by the January 15, 2026 deadline.
