Fans wear baseball caps to show their support for a particular team, and for most people, what cap they wear is unremarkable. But Prince Harry is not most people.
Canadians were displeased when Harry, the Duke of Sussex, was seen wearing a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball cap, not a Toronto Blue Jays cap, at Game 4 of the World Series, which was played on Oct. 28 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
“I would like to apologize to Canada for wearing it,” Harry said in an interview with CTV, a Canadian news channel, that was broadcast on Thursday. “Secondly, I was under duress.”
“When you’re missing a lot of hair on top, and you’re sitting under flood lights, you’ll take any hat that’s available,” he added.
Harry, who once lived in Canada, offered the apology after he was presented with a Jays baseball cap on Thursday while visiting veterans at Sunnybrook Veterans Center in Toronto.
Canada is a former British colony and remains part of its commonwealth. It gained full autonomy from the monarchy in 1982, but Harry’s father, King Charles III, is Canada’s official head of state and has been slowly replacing Queen Elizabeth II on Canadian currency. Canadian passports are still issued in the name of the current monarch.
The Blue Jays and the Dodgers faced off in the World Series, which ended on Nov. 1 with the Dodgers defeating the Jays in dramatic fashion, 5-4, in extra innings in Game 7.
It was the first time the Blue Jays, Canada’s only Major League Baseball team, had made it to — and won — the World Series since 1993.
The Series ended the same day that Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada apologized to President Trump for an anti-tariff television ad featuring former President Ronald Reagan that aired in the United States during the Series.
Tariffs and trade relations have created tensions between Canada and the United States, usually friendly countries with the world’s longest unmilitarized border.
But Harry’s apology was not as serious. He made himself the butt of a joke and referred to the episode as “Hat Gate.”

Harry, who now lives in Montecito, Calif., with his wife, Meghan, and their two children, said he attended Game 4 as a guest of the owners of the Dodgers when he wore the cap.
“I was doing what I thought was the polite thing to do,” he said.
He said he supported the Jays through the rest of the Series and was devastated that they lost.
“Game 5, Game 6, Game 7, I was Blue Jays throughout,” he said. “But now that I’ve admitted that, it’s going to be pretty hard for me to return back to Los Angeles.”
