The number of contenders for the College Football Playoff is gradually thinning out. There are three weeks left in the regular season before conference championship games in December. Week 12 features a pair of big matchups in the SEC and some sneaky good matchups elsewhere.
In the SEC, Alabama, No. 4 in the AP Top 25, hosts No. 11 Oklahoma as a 6.5-point favorite on BetMGM. The Crimson Tide are 6-0 in the SEC and three of those opponents are currently ranked in the AP poll. Oklahoma has two losses and could vault into the College Football Playoff picture with a win, or likely be removed from contention with a loss.
The stakes are similar for No. 5 Georgia against No. 10 Texas. The Bulldogs have one loss and can virtually lock up a playoff spot with a win (a win against 1-8 Charlotte next week would then get Georgia to 10 wins).
Texas has two losses and still has a game against No. 3 Texas A&M to come. The Longhorns have won four in a row, including a win against Oklahoma, but the last three wins have been by one score. Texas’ four road games don’t tell a pretty picture: 14-7 loss at Ohio State, 29-21 loss at Florida, 16-13 win at 4-5 Kentucky, 45-38 overtime win at 5-5 Mississippi State.
Georgia is favored by 6 points.
The only other ranked matchup of the week is No. 9 Notre Dame at No. 23 Pitt. The Fighting Irish are favored by 10.5 points.
Pitt is 7-2 and realistically its playoff chances won’t be affected by this game. The Panthers are in a four-way tie for the ACC lead at 5-1 and thus in contention to get in the CFP via winning the conference, while any at-large berth seems unlikely. You can probably concoct some scenarios where Pitt wins this game and then loses in the ACC title game to finish 10-3 and that’s good enough to get an at-large spot, but let’s save ourselves those headaches until later in November.
Notre Dame has been sitting on two losses since Week 2 and this is the Irish’s last chance to show well against a decent opponent. Syracuse and Stanford, both 3-7, are the last two teams on the schedule.
Speaking of the ACC, No. 20 Virginia, one of the teams tied with Pitt at 5-1 in the ACC, travels to Duke, another ACC contender at 4-1. The Cavaliers are a 6.5-point underdog. The sportsbooks are predicting even more chaos in the ACC. Virginia did have quarterback Chandler Morris leave Saturday’s loss to Wake Forest due to injury.
No. 19 Louisville now has two conference losses after losing at home to Cal in overtime. The Cardinals host Clemson this week as 3-point favorites.
After a week that saw several ranked teams on bye, the only AP Top 25 team on bye this week is No. 13 Vanderbilt.
Here are the odds for every game involving an AP Top 25 team, plus a few other notable games.
